Best Teas for a Sore Throat

Margaret Wack

Nothing hits the spot when you’re feeling under the weather like a good cup of tea. Aside from being delicious, many teas also have a wealth of medicinal properties that help to soothe and heal the body. While tea may not be able to treat more serious illnesses on its own, it can help to treat symptoms like a sore throat. Tea can be used in addition to traditional medicine in order to provide relief and make you feel better as your body fights off illness. Here are a few of our recommendations for teas for a sore throat:

EgyptianChamomileHerbal1.jpg

1. Chamomile

Chamomile has been used in herbal medicine for hundreds of years, and has a light, floral character and healing properties that will have you feeling better in no time. Chamomile is especially effective at soothing a sore throat, and also has a wealth of other benefits that are helpful when you’re sick, including calming nerves, promoting relaxation, and inducing sleep. Our Chamomile is made from whole chamomile flower heads, and brews up a bright gold color with a lovely natural sweetness. For additional throat-soothing benefits, add a dollop of honey and enjoy!

Our Chamomile Teas

Herbal tea: Egyptian Chamomile, Lavender Lullaby

2. Licorice Root

Licorice root has been used in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for centuries to treat sore throats and other illnesses. Licorice root contains antiviral and antimicrobial properties that help to protect against disease and ward off potential sore throat causes. In addition, licorice root imparts a lingering sweetness to whatever tea it’s added to, and makes for a tasty, healthful treat whenever you’re feeling under the weather. When consumed in excess, licorice root can have adverse side effects, so it’s a good idea to sip these teas in moderation.

Our Licorice Teas

Oolong tea: Ginseng Oolong

Herbal tea: Atomic Gold, Sing Your Song

Rooibos tea: Honeybush Hot Cider

Turmeric+Mango+detail.jpg

3. Turmeric

A staple of traditional herbal medicine that has recently seen a surge in popularity in the Western world, turmeric contains a variety of health benefits, and can help to ease the pain of a sore throat. Turmeric contains a beneficial compound called curcumin, which has been shown to have a variety of antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antiviral properties. Turmeric is part of the ginger family, and imparts a bright yellow-orange color to teas. It has a woody, slightly spicy taste, and is a soothing addition to tea that will have you feeling better in no time.

Our Turmeric Teas

Green tea: Turmeric Mango

Herbal tea: Atomic Gold

4. Peppermint

Peppermint is another common herbal tea with many health benefits that can help to soothe a sore throat. Peppermint contains menthol, which is an effective decongestant with cooling, soothing properties. This herbal tea can also aid in digestion, and is a great choice for a tea to wind down with before bed. We carry a variety of herbal and caffeinated blends that contain peppermint. If you’re suffering from a sore throat, try a fresh, minty cup of tea to ease your symptoms!

Our Peppermint Teas

Black tea: Lemon Mint Menage

Herbal tea: Peppermint, Alice’s Peppermint Party, Sing Your Song, Lavender Mint

Rooibos tea: Chocolate Mint

5. Ginger

A common ingredient in herbal medicine, ginger root is yet another herbal addition that can help to soothe the symptoms of a sore throat. Ginger contains a wealth of antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, helping to fight off the causes of a sore throat at their root. In addition, ginger is a popular anti-nausea aid, and can help to calm and soothe the body. We carry a variety of teas with ginger in them, from traditional chai blends to caffeine-free herbal alternatives.

Cinnamon is a common ingredient added to spiced tea blends, and can help to ease the pain of a sore throat. For a traditional cinnamon-spiced tea, try a spiced black tea blend with a dash of milk and honey. We also carry a variety of herbal options that are a great way to enjoy a soothing, flavorful cup without the caffeine.

Our Cinnamon Teas

Black tea: Masala Chai, Solstice Spice

Pu-erh tea: Dandy Cinnamon Pu-erh

7. Tea with Lemon and Honey

While lemon and honey may not be an ingredient of tea in of themselves, they’re a common and effective herbal remedy for soothing a sore throat. A dash of honey and lemon juice can brighten up both caffeinated and herbal teas, but we think it pairs especially well with a classic black tea. Honey helps to soothe the throat and protect against irritants, while lemon juice is chock full of vitamin C. You can enjoy tea with lemon and honey as a soothing, healthful drink on its own, or add a splash of brandy for a medicinal hot toddy!

Using Tea to Treat a Sore Throat

While you should always seek out the help of a medical professional if you’re experiencing a serious illness, herbal remedies like tea have been used for centuries in order to treat minor ailments and illnesses. Herbal teas have a wealth of beneficial properties that can help to soothe the symptoms of illness and to ward off future disease. Caffeinated teas made from the camellia sinensis plant also contain additional healthful properties. These include antioxidants, which help to protect against degenerative disease and promote cellular health, and a compound known as l-theanine, which helps to induce calm and relaxation.

Aside from these beneficial properties, the warmth and steam of a hot cup of tea can soothe a sore throat and promote a faster recovery. Tea helps to hydrate the body, which is another important factor in overcoming illness. With all of these benefits and more, you’re sure to be feeling better in no time!

Cinnamon Tea

Margaret Wack

Solstice+Spice+(above).jpg

What is Cinnamon Tea?

Cinnamon has been used for centuries to flavor tea, and is often used alongside other spices in a variety of different teas. Cinnamon bark is harvested from the cinnamon tree, which curls into cinnamon sticks as dries. Cinnamon can be added to teas in the form of whole sticks of cinnamon, or can be broken up into fragment or ground into a fine powder before being added to tea. Cinnamon provides a pungent sweet, savory flavor to many teas, and often works in concert with other herbs and spices, such as cloves and ginger, to flavor a wide variety of teas.

Cinnamon Health Benefits

Cinnamon has a variety of impressive health benefits that make it a great addition to a healthy lifestyle. Cinnamon is a powerful anti-inflammatory, and can help to soothe aches and pains in the body. Cinnamon is also full of antioxidants, which help to protect the body by promoting cellular health and warding off degenerative diseases like cancer. Cinnamon can also help to lower blood sugar, boost metabolism, and fight off bacteria. With all of these benefits and more, cinnamon is a healthy addition to any tea!

Chocolate Tea to Sate Your Sweet Tooth

Margaret Wack

A cup of chocolate tea on a red scarf, surrounded by chocolate strawberries

What is Chocolate Tea?

If you’re looking for a little chocolate to keep you in good spirits, a chocolate tea might be the perfect thing. These naturally sweet teas make the perfect cup whether you’re in the mood for a taste of decadent dessert, or are just looking for something sweet to treat yourself with. And with far fewer calories than real chocolate, they can be a guilt-free way to enjoy a little something special.

Chocolate has been used for thousands of years, both for its medicinal benefits as well as for its taste. Chocolate-infused drinks originated in Mesoamerica, where cacao was a commodity in high demand. Mayan, Aztec, and Olmec civilizations in Central and South America all grew, traded for, and consumed the highly sought after item. In English, the word “chocolate” derives from the Nahuatl word xocolatl, which refers to the drink made by combining cacao and water. Chocolate was spread from the Americas to Europe, Asia, and Africa after European colonization and conquest. Today, whether consumed as a beverage or as a confection, chocolate is one of the most popular foods in the world!

When people talk about chocolate tea, they’re usually referring to tea that has chocolate, cacoa nibs, or cocoa powder added to it for a rich, chocolate-y flavor. Chocolate teas can be made with true teas from the camellia sinensis plant, or added to herbal teas like rooibos or mate. Whether you’re looking for something sweet to perk you up in the morning or sip as you wind down at the end of the day, chocolate teas are rich, soothing, and hit the spot when you’re in the mood for something sweet!

Health Benefits of Chocolate Teas

Teas made with cacao and chocolate have a wide variety of health benefits. Chocolate and cacao contain flavanols that help to protect the heart and lower blood pressure, making them a great choice for people trying to incorporate heart-healthy foods into their diet. Chocolate teas may also have positive effects on treating diabetes, reducing heart disease, and improving overall heart health. Chocolate and cacao are also high in antioxidants, helping to reduce free radicals in the body, promoting cellular health and even helping to ward off certain types of cancer. While chocolate itself is calorically dense, chocolate teas can be a great way to enjoy the flavor of chocolate with far fewer calories.

Our Chocolate Teas

If you’re looking for a caffeinated cup, an herbal tea to end the day with, or are just looking for something sweet and tasty, we have a variety of chocolate teas to choose from that are sure to sate your sweet tooth and warm you from the inside out!

Coco Loco

This tasty brew includes black tea, shredded coconut, and cacoa nibs for a sweet treat that’s sure to boost your spirits whenever you brew up a cup. Our Coco Loco tea is velvety-smooth and naturally sweet, with no added sugar or other sweeteners. Coco Loco contains a moderate amount of caffeine, so we recommend enjoying it in the morning if you’re sensitive to caffeine. This is a delicious, decadent tea that is as aromatic as it is downright tasty! Enjoy it on its own, or with a splash of milk and a dash of sugar for an added touch of sweetness.

Nutty Mocha Mate

Mate is an herb that’s grown in South America and is popular in countries like Chile and Argentina. While it does contain caffeine, many people experience the effects of the caffeine present in mate differently than they experience the caffeine in tea or coffee, reporting a sustained, uplifting effect that boosts concentration and mental acuity. Our Nutty Mocha Mate is a blend of toasted mate, dark chocolate chips, sunflower petals, and hazelnut that brews up into a rich, sweet cup full of chocolate-y goodness. If you’re a fan of all things mocha, this tea is sure to hit the spot!

Chocolate Mint Rooibos

This rooibos tea flavored with peppermint, cacao bean pieces, and calendula has the bright, sweet flavor of an after-dinner mint chocolate. Whether you’re looking to indulge in dessert without the calories, or are just in the mood for a sweet, soothing, caffeine-free cup, Chocolate Mint Rooibos is a popular chocolate tea that’s sure to brighten up your day. Rooibos, an herb that is primarily grown in South Africa, tastes somewhat similar to black tea but is naturally caffeine-free, making it a great choice for those who are sensitive to caffeine.

Chocolate Strawberry

All the flavor of fresh strawberries dipped in decadent chocolate in one little cup! This blend of cocoa peel, strawberry, apple, rose hips, hibiscus, orange peel, and calendula is a sweet, slightly tart tea that’s sure to hit the spot when you’re craving a little sweetness in your life. In addition to all the health benefits of cocoa, a cup of Chocolate Strawberry also contains all of the benefits of hibiscus, a popular floral tea ingredient known for its high levels of antioxidants and vitamin C.

Whether you’re looking for a little morning pick-me-up or a cup of tea with dessert, these chocolate teas are just the thing for a sweet, soothing cup that’s sure to bring a smile to your face.

Mint Teas

Green - Moroccan Mint (cup).jpg

Rich in antioxidants, mint is a flavorful and aromatic herb that has been used for centuries. While peppermint and spearmint are the most well known varieties, other types include apple mint, lemon mint, chocolate mint and even licorice mint.

In the world of tea, mint can be brewed on its own, blended with tea leaves, or combined with flowers, fruit or other herbs. Mint is a tisane rather than a tea, meaning that it is not derived from the camellia sinensis plant, but comes instead from a different family of herbs.

Our Mint Teas

At ArtfulTea, we carry many blends containing mint, from herbal infusions to black and green flavored teas. Whether you’re looking for a soothing after dinner drink or an invigorating morning brew, we’re sure to have a tea that will strike your fancy!

How to Cold Brew Tea

Margaret Wack

IMG_0629.JPG

Looking for a way to cool off in the warmer months, while still enjoying your favorite teas? Cold-brew iced tea is a fantastic way to stay cool without forgoing the pleasures of good tea. Best of all, it’s a hands-off process - simply leave your tea to steep in the fridge overnight, and enjoy iced tea the very next day!

How to Cold Brew Tea

Cold brewing tea is a breeze - simply fill up your pot or pitcher with tea leaves and cold, filtered water, using about one teaspoon of tea for every six ounces of water. We recommend using our urban tumblers for a single glass that you can take on the go, or an iced tea pot with a built-in infuser. Other options include tea infusers or filters. Cover the tea and steep for at least four hours, but preferably overnight. Remove the tea leaves and enjoy delicious, refreshing iced tea ready to go!

Why Cold Brew

When traditionally prepared, iced tea can taste bitter thanks to the tannins present in tea. Cold brewed iced tea, however, results in a mellower, sweeter flavor, without any of the tannic bite. Cold brewing also doesn’t involve heating any water or waiting for hot tea to cool.

Cold brewed caffeine also has less caffeine, making it a great choice for those looking to limit their caffeine consumption. Best of all, it’s an easy, painless process that results in great tea!

How to Choose an Iced Tea

While you can make an iced tea out of any tea, some teas particularly shine when served cold. Here are a few of our favorites to cool off with in the summer months:

Apricot Brandy

Organic apricot pieces and natural brandy flavor give this black tea blend a delicious full flavor and luscious sweetness. An aromatic and visually appealing blend, it’s also our best selling flavored tea.

Summer Romance

Sweet papaya and strawberries blend with black and green teas for an intoxicating, exotic flavor reminiscent of fresh fruit and long summer afternoons.

Moroccan Mint

In Morocco, mint flavored green tea isn't just a tradition, it's a sign of hospitality and friendship. Our blend is the finest Chinese gunpowder tea combined with exceptional quality spearmint. A lively and refreshing tea!

Berry Bold

This organic blend of sencha green tea with dried goji berries, sweet strawberry pieces and acai berry powder is not only packed with antioxidants, but also tastes delicious! The sweet and vegetal flavors mingle to create a lovely cup of berry green tea with numerous health benefits.

Citrus Sonata

A superb blend of exceptional quality oolong with natural citrus essential oils. This beautiful tea will carry you away with its uplifting flavor and fragrance. Grown at high elevation in the Fujian Province of China, this is a crisp green oolong enhanced by a subtle grapefruit flavor.

Mango Pear

White peony tea is blended with organic mango cubes, apple, and pear to create a beautifully delicate, fruity, floral tea with a light body and sweet, uplifting flavor. Low in caffeine, this tea will give you a modest boost and is perfect for a relaxing, rejuvenating afternoon cup.

Peach Rooibos

Our Peach Rooibos blends green and red rooibos with peach bits, blackberry leaves, and calendula petals for a sweet, fruity cup. Like biting into a ripe peach on a warm summer’s day!

Lavender Mint

We've combined two aromatic and soothing herbs for a refreshing blend that's quickly becoming one of our most popular herbals. Calming lavender blossoms complement organic peppermint, which is known for its digestive benefits and cooling properties. A fresh, lightly floral cup!

Blueberry Pomegrante

Blueberry Pomegranate is delicious fruit tea packed with flavor and beneficial properties. Pomegranate and blueberries add sweetness to tart, healthful hibiscus in this lovely, fruit-forward blend. One of our most popular herbal teas, Blueberry Pomegranate is perfect to sate a sweet tooth.

Herbal Infusions

Nick Rose

ArtfulTea_033017-077_altcrop.jpg

Herbal infusions, while sometimes referred to as “herbal tea," aren’t actually tea at all. Tea made from herbs, flowers, and spices, rather than with leaves from the camellia sinensis plant, are more properly called herbal infusions or tisanes. While you can still call them herbal teas, these brews are naturally caffeine-free, and can also differ in other ways from their camellia sinensis counterparts.

Herbal teas have been used for centuries to promote health and wellness, and can soothe everything from a scratchy throat to sore muscles. These herbal concoctions are prominent in Chinese medicine, ayurveda, and folk remedies from all over the world.

Herbal Health Benefits

While herbal teas typically don’t contain as many antioxidants as tea made from the camellia sinensis plant, they have a wealth of other beneficial properties. Herbal teas are great for hydration, and can be a great way to ensure that your water intake is up to snuff. Herbal teas also contain many ingredients with beneficial properties in their own right, like ginger, mint, hibiscus, and lavender. Herbal teas can be a great way to reduce stress and develop a bedtime ritual that allows you to relax and unwind.

Herbal Varieties

There are a wide variety of herbal teas readily available, some even made from flowers, herbs, and other plants that you can find in your own backyard. Flowers like lavender, chamomile, and rose compose a variety of different herbal teas. Hibiscus, which brews up a vibrant magenta color and has a wealth of health benefits, is another common ingredient in herbal teas. Mint-based herbal teas are also very popular.

There are also several kinds of herbal tea that are common enough to merit their own category. Rooibos is an herbal tea grown in South Africa’s Western Cape region. Dutch for “red bush,” rooibos is sometimes also called red tea. Rooibos is naturally caffeine free, and has a rich, slightly sweet flavor. Rooibos is the base for many of our caffeine-free teas, including Rooibos Chai and Earl Grey Rooibos.

Yerba mate is a type of tea made from the leaves and stems of the holly plant ilex paraguariensis and is native to South America. Sometimes known as “drink of the gods” or “drink of friendship,” mate was first discovered and prepared by the indigenous Guarani people. While mate does contain caffeine, many people experience it differently than they experience caffeine in tea or coffee. It’s extremely popular in countries like Chile and Argentina, where it is celebrated for its warming, stimulating properties. Traditionally, yerba mate is best when shared with friends!
